What does being Bi-polar mean

Bi-polar is a personality disorder that people are rarely able to identify. Most of the times people can't differentiate between being Bi-polar, depressed or having a borderline personality disorder. And this also results in them not being diagnosed correctly.

Now before we begin a quick disclaimer- I don't claim of being a trained professional psychologist or psychiatrist. But I have done my research and only then am I posting this post. If you are doubtful of the things I mention in this post go ahead do your own research and learn more about these disorders. Because the more you know the better. This post is strictly written with the intention of personal research and is no way meant to hurt anyone.

Ok, now let's get to the actual post. Mental Disorders have a stigma associated with it, where people are afraid to accept they have a mental disorder because of the way society reacts to them. Having a mental disorder is never a person's personal fault. It's just the way their brain is wired. Although there are a few disorders that are instigated by traumatic events in a person's life such as PTSD( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or body dysmorphic disorder. That being said, a lot of people have now begun asking for help and are allowing themselves to be diagnosed. Due to the increased amount of representation in media people have now begun smartening up to mental disorders and are becoming more aware. Suicide risks are also said to be higher in the cases of people having mental disorders.

A bipolar person is someone who has extreme levels of mood swings. And by extreme I mean EXTREME. The mood of a bipolar person will switch from highs to lows. The highs are called mania or euphoria. Here the person will feel excessively energetic and excited. And the lows are depression where the person will suddenly feel very low and depressed for days together. They will feel tired or low on energy and will not be productive. A bipolar person will go from feeling like the King of the world to the pauper of the streets in just a mere change of mood. Now if you're thinking "Hey that's not that bad," you're wrong. A bipolar person during his highs may partake in reckless activities due to his euphoric feeling of invincibility and at the same time during his depressive lows may also resort to ending their lives. Suicide is not an uncommon choice for a bipolar person. And sometimes during their swings, they might just feel empty and emotionless which may again cause them to harm themselves just to feel something even if its just pain. A lot of times people feel that like most disorders, bipolar is caused "due to a reason." But it is important to note that being bipolar has got nothing to do with having a tragic childhood or a traumatic life. There is no trigger for their moods, it just happens. One moment you're high and the next you're low, that's that.
Now that does not mean that bipolar is a disorder that cannot be diagnosed. Bipolar can be diagnosed and even though it does not just run out of your life after therapy, there is a way for a bipolar person to function in his daily life and perform his day to day chores.
Some mental disorders are easy to spot and identify like schizophrenia or OCD(obsessive-compulsive disorder) because they have very obvious symptoms. But disorders like Bi-polar are very difficult to identify due to which people suffering from Bi-polar disorder end up being incorrectly diagnosed. This is an excerpt from Medical Daily which states why it is important for a bipolar person to be diagnosed properly. (https://www.medicaldaily.com/bipolar-vs-borderline-personality-disorder-differences-between-two-and-how-avoid-335314)
"According to a study published in Psychiatry, a large number of bipolar patients (up to 69 percent) are misdiagnosed initially, and up to one-third remain misdiagnosed for a long time afterward. Many bipolar patients are first diagnosed with depression and prescribed antidepressants — which can actually be dangerous to bipolar patients since they can induce hypomania and trigger the mania to depression cycle over and over again."
Being bipolar is not something to blame yourself over, again it's just the way you're brain is wired. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or somebody you know, ask for professional help. There is nothing wrong with asking for help. If you are unsure about your mental health research about it or visit a therapist. Because a healthy mind will ensure you a healthy life.

With that, I leave you to your devices.
Introvert Out.
